Americans everywhere are still trying to recover from the Orlando, Florida shooting over the weekend that left 49 people dead at the hands of Muslim extremist Omar Mateen. Now, a woman from Uzbekistan who was married to Mateen for two years has broken her silence, and what she had to say is chilling.
According to Heavy, Sitora Alisherzoda Yusufiy married Mateen in Florida in 2009. The couple divorced two years later, but Yusufiy is now speaking out to say that she only lived with Mateen for a few months. She claims she lived with Mateen from April to August of 2009, but the relationship was so abusive that her parents eventually had to “rescue” her from her violent husband. The divorce process took two long years.
Yusufiy reportedly met Mateen online, but the relationship turned violent as soon as they got married.
“He was not a stable person,” she said of Mateen in an interview with the Washington Post, “He beat me. He would just come home and start beating me up because the laundry wasn’t finished or something like that…He seemed like a normal human being. He was a very private person.”
She added that her parents “literally saved my life” when they got her away from him.
Today, Yusuify has moved on with her life and is engaged to a Brazilian man named Marco Dias.
After the shooting, Yusufiy posted the following status on her Facebook page:
Great Spirit I offer my deepest prayer and condolences to the victims of the Orlando shooting…
May they transition in peace may their souls be healed, may the wounded victims recover and heal in peace, may the families and loved ones heal and find their peace….
