Mount Rushmore in South Dakota is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States. However, most people are unaware of what’s hidden behind it.
According to Right Wing News, a hidden room is located behind Abraham Lincoln’s head on the legendary mountain. When the monument was first built, sculptor Gutzon Borglum had wanted to create a much larger image that included several important moments in America history as well as images of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.
Unfortunately, Gutzon’s plan was far too complicated to be completed, but he was given permission to start work on a Hall of Records, which was to be a hidden room that would tell the story of the US to future generations, including the country’s charter documents. Gutzon died before this project could be finished, leaving it uncompleted for decades.
Finally, the chamber was completed when the project was revived in the 1990s.
