With the Republican National Convention coming up next week, everyone is dying to know who presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump chose as his Vice President. Now, a new name has risen to the top of Trump’s shortlist that nobody ever saw coming.
According to The Washington Post, four people involved in Trump’s vetting process have confirmed that he is strongly considering tapping retired Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn to project strength and know-how on national security. Though Flynn is a registered Democrat, he is also a fierce critic of President Barack Obama.
This turn towards appointing a military running mate is being driven by Trump himself rather than his advisors, according to the sources. These reports come as Trump has been telling people close to him that all of the current national unrest demands a “tough and steady” presence alongside him on the ticket.
Trump had previously been considering GOP insiders like Newt Gingrich and Mike Spence, but in the last few days, he has gotten the sense that he does not necessarily want or need a running mate who will satisfy Republican insiders. After some testy exchanges with GOP lawmakers during his visit Thursday, Trump is now very open to a non-politician running mate.
