During the DNC on Tuesday night, former president Bill Clinton gave a speech in which he recounted his forty year “love story” with Hillary Clinton. However, he left out a major part of it by ignoring his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky…
In his upcoming book Inside The Clinton White House, Russell Riley reveals that the Lewinsky affair changed Bill’s White House forever. According to Daily Mail, his staff lost all respect for him after the affair went public, and Hillary’s heart was completely broken.
“It wasn’t so much the morality of the situation itself… Clinton put his fortunes in the hands of a 21-year old, totally irresponsible child,” said Lawrence Stein, who served as assistant to Clinton and his chief lobbyist.
“I think one of my staff came to tell me [when the Monica Lewinsky story broke] and I said, ‘You’re kidding,'” former Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala told Riley. “And I remembered [Lewinsky] because during the shutdown of the government, she was outside in the Chief of Staff’s office, sitting at one of the desks… I just couldn’t believe it, couldn’t believe it. Then I was furious. We were on a roll. We had a lot to get done.”
“We were going to have a Cabinet meeting,” she added. “I actually walked in and asked the president whether he had done it, as did Madeleine Albright, and he said, ‘Absolutely not.’ So I just took him at his word.”
Susan Thomases, longtime Clinton friend and campaign scheduler, feared that something like this would happen even before he won the presidential election.
“I told him if I found him having sex on the campaign, he was dead, that I was leaving and taking everybody with me,” Thomases told Riley. “I said, ‘If you’re stupid enough to blow this whole Presidential thing over your dick. And if that turns out to be true, buddy, I’m going home, and I’m taking people with me If you don’t have enough self control to keep yourself straight, then it’s just dumb.'”
