Unlike Hillary Clinton and her loyal band of crony pions at least Vice President Biden and President Obama have the ability to self evaluate and be self aware. Biden blunted stated to the media that the Democrats lost the presidential election because they were unable to win over middle class voters who gravitated towards Donald Trump.
Biden himself has blue collar roots in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He specifically mentioned the parties inability to win over blue collar, white, working class men and women. The non coastal voters of the rust belt and the Midwest. Furthermore, he stated some elitism crept into the party which he insisted must change. He said all this in an extensive interview with the Los Angeles Times. He said,
“I believe that we were not letting an awful lot of people — high school-educated, mostly Caucasian, but also people of color — know that we understood their problems.”
Biden attempted to explain why Donald Trump was able to pull off an electoral college win. He gave a very tough assessment of the party and of Hillary’s Clinton post election and post recount. Instead of touting the three million person popular vote win. Like many of hisnparty are trying to do. He also told the reporter,
“They’re all the people I grew up with. They’re their kids. And they’re not racist. They’re not sexist. But we didn’t talk to them.”
The outgoing Vice President also discussed his considered bid for President and ultimately his decision not to. He went on to describe a rally in Pennsylvania of Trump’s where he thaughty to himself that they might actually lose the election.
Moreover, he maintained he felt that Clinton never really had a clear vision or reason why she was running other than she had to for posterity purposes. Biden discussed how the party unconsciously created a so called false narrative between working class and progressive values. Also mentioning the damage that Clinton’s basket of deplorables cost. He said,
“What are the arguments we’re hearing? ‘Well, we’ve got to be more progressive.’ I’m not saying we should be less progressive. We should be proud of where the hell we are, and not yield an inch. But in the meantime, you can’t eat equality. You know? We constantly made a mistake of not speaking to the fears, aspirations, concerns of middle class people … you didn’t hear a word about that husband and wife working, making 100,000 bucks a year, two kids, struggling and scared to death. They used to be our constituency. Trump at least acknowledged the pain. But he played to the prejudice. He played to the fear.”
Biden didn’t rule out a 2020 run but mentioned that his health and stamina might not be up to par by then so he neither confirmed nor denied a potential run.
