President Donald Trump has told the public many times now he doesn’t intend to release his tax returns until his audit by the IRS is complete. This wasn’t an issue for voters, who decided he was a better candidate than Clinton. For Liberals though, it is quickly becoming a major sticking point.
A petition to the White House started Friday has gained over 217,000 signatures demanding that Trump release his tax returns now that he has assumed the Presidency. This amounts to nothing more than a request he can simply reject. The problem has become compounded after WikiLeaks just announced that if anyone sends them Trump’s tax returns they will publish them, opening the possibility they may be leaked by someone who has access to them.
While many criticized WikiLeaks for actively helping Trump get elected, WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange has maintained that the organizations primary philosophy is transparency. While Trump allies such as Sean Hannity were hugely appreciative of WikiLeaks while they were actively helping Trump through releasing troves of private communications within the Democratic National Committee it is likely that Conservatives favorable view of the organization will likely sour now that the organization is likely to engage in activity that is detrimental to President Trump.
WikiLeaks tweeted out: “Trump Counselor Kellyanne Conway stated today that Trump will not release his tax returns,” WikiLeaks posted on Twitter.
ViaTheHill: WikiLeaks also blasted the president for declining to release his tax returns himself.
“Trump’s breach of promise over the release of his tax returns is even more gratuitous than [Hillary] Clinton concealing her Goldman Sachs transcripts,” the organization tweeted.
Kellyanne Conway, on Sunday said the president would not release his tax returns.
“We litigated this all through the election. People didn’t care,” Conway, a top Trump adviser, said on ABC’s “This Week.”
“They voted for him, and let me make this very clear: most Americans are — are very focused on what their tax returns will look like while President Trump is in office, not what his look like.”
